ROBOTS SAVE THE DAY When I graduated from university in 1997, full-time journalism jobs were scarce. It wasn't enough to be a good writer anymore. Publishers were clamoring for reporters who also understood the web. Fortunately, I was already familiar with computer programming, as I'd long enjoyed building robots. Learning Javascript was a snap after struggling through texts on C++. Once I had the basics down, I had no trouble finding web work. As an online editor of an up-market magazine called Toronto Life I edited copy and programmed Web pages. That job put me in front of the right people and I was soon writing for the print publication.
